GATESHEAD 1 v 3 VAUXHALL MOTORS

FA CUP 2nd QUALIFYING ROUND

Injury ravaged Vauxhall Motors stunned the Unibond Premier Division leaders, to ease themselves into the next round of the F. A. Cup, as they inflicted a first defeat of the season upon the hosts at the International Stadium.

In a first half of few chances, Motors defender Mark Hotte was dispossessed just outside his own box and almost paid the price, as Ian Robson went round the visiting keeper Sean Lake, but the defender got back to recover the situation with a block tackle.  Then on 37 minutes, home keeper Peter Keen was shown a straight red card, after he had deliberately handled outside his area to deny the lively Dave Roberts on his first senior start, as he attempted to lob the out-rushing custodian.

The Motormen then struck twice in quick succession early in the second half to take control of the tie.  Roberts coolly set up Steve Johnson for the first on 49 minutes and just two minutes later, a deep cross from Jordan Holmes was dispatched in style with a first time shot by the same scorer for his second from a similar position on the left, beyond the stranded deputy Flynn.

Gateshead gained a lifeline, when Dave Southern’s free kick was deflected in off the wall on 65 minutes, but Motors held firm and confirmed their passage three minutes from time, when substitutes Paul Taylor and Tom Field combined for the latter to strike a third, again from the inside left channel.

Not only was it Vauxhall’s first away success of the campaign, but it was Gateshead’s first reverse in 22 matches dating back to last March.

Vauxhall: Lake, Moogan, Marsh-Evans, Griffiths (Clarke 84), Kelly, Hotte, Garrity (Field 76), Holmes, Wright (Taylor 70), Johnson, Roberts.  Sub not used: 13. Longrigg, 15. Egerton
